As a protest of #SOPA and #PIPA (The Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act) two pieces of legislation that are up for debate once again on January 18, 2012, I will be blacked out from all my websites, deviantART included. What does this mean?

***Protest SOPA, which is going up to a vote in Congress on Tuesday January 24. This bill, if it passes, will profoundly affect how we exchange information, how we organize information, and to whom information is accessible. It will devastate any form of "appropriative" creative endeavor, it will alter the way search engines work, it will handicap scholarship and research and library science. It is a phenomenal breech in freedom of expression under the guise of "tightening copyright laws" that I honestly never thought would happen in America. I hope I haven't over-estimated my country. Please protest SOPA Bill.

DeviantART is also going to be closed tomorrow for 12 hours in protest. I have been told to save my art which will be a (worthwhile) daylong endeavor. I URGE YOU TO DO THE SAME.

Anyone with any fanart, fanfiction, pastiche rpg logs, pop art, appropriative art, etc, if you have it on a website it might be wise to start saving it to a hard drive in case of the worst case scenario. Honestly, I don't want to sound melodramatic, but this is so classically dystopian and anti-intellectual and I am shocked it's even possible. The banning of knowledge and intellectual pursuit, the policing of free expression, are all red flags of the END of an enlightened society. DO NOT let this happen! Make the USA better than ancient Rome! ***
