What Binds You?by ~AmberPalette

Everyone has something that binds them. Complete freedom is unattainable--or if it's obtained, it means you don't have a hell of a lot of meaningful roles or responsibilities that you serve, and that you're probably incredibly lonely.

Sometimes those bonds can be gruesome, or painful. Other times those bonds are beautiful and healing (like loving someone). Bonds can be innate or environmentally specific. It depends on the individual.

This started out as a character study for Xelloss from Slayers (I will leave it up to you as to what "binds him" in my symbolic approach). It became something bigger and more thoughtful, so I don't consider it fanart (however for legal purposes lol, Xelloss's creator is Hajime Kanzaka).

The etching style with a lovely Micron 01 pen is inspired by a print by Barry Moser, called "Minos." Thanks to

The clashing of red and white in the background draws my attention most fruitfully. I remember, of course, from "Night Light," that which binds Xellos in a manner that he both loves and hates simultaneously, and this is, of course, something that we all experience. I, too, have a part of myself that binds me - a part that I love and despise in an ongoing war that I would not be the same without.

I love how his one eye is open and looking fearful and apined, whilst the other is closed in something of rapture. I feel this furthers the assuption that he has mixed, conflicting emotions about that which holds him tightly. ^_^ Your brilliance appears to be something laskin to light, flickering in a vast quantity of places. *tips hat appreciatively*

For Xelloss that's definitely one great interpretation. Thank you for noticing the use of both background and the state of his eyes for this interpretation. Of course there's also the age old thing that he has two sides to his personality, that of sneaky yet civilized priest, vs. confrontational yet feral general. And yes the conflict even extends to his bond itself. Thank you for being so observant!!!

Yes, it was meant to be uncomfortable and stifling. What binds him and causes him both pains and pleasures is his two sided personality. Everyone has something that both limits and in part defines them, was my thesis of sorts
