LONG LONG rp story short: Lau becomes a closer friend/brother figure of Ciel's. But Lau discovers what happens when he removes Ciel's eyepatch, even after he becomes a confidante. Something enormously upsetting has Ciel wheezing and in tears, and Lau makes the mistake of trying to scoot over his eye patch and give him a bracing half-hug. Ciel panics and vehemently strikes him.

Thus Ciel reacts to Lau being a particularly impertinent chess piece, and Lau reacts in disdain and anger at Ciel's stubbornness and ingratitude.

And also, gets his first clear view of the contract seal. (This was rped a lot more fluffily with my friend ...but I actually drew this after she was unable to be online for a long time, and I became very frustrated with not being able to find quite the right Ciel for me since, so it operates on a symbolic level too, that I just miss fun things that were taken away by nobody's fault, because of difficult irl circumstances, and because interests change, etc etc).

Whereas Lau had meant to be a source of comfort and is ever the people-pleaser, Ciel received his gesture as a severe breech of hard-earned trust.

I told y'all Lau and Ciel's relationship is my most complicated headcanon, LOL.
